Owen has been amazing from beginning to end. We have been following his youtube videos since before we moved to Canada. As first time home buyers, he took the time to walk us through the entire process and ensured we understood what we were getting into. All the apartments Owen showed us were in line with our requirements and under our budget. He also gave us ideas on renovations as well as contacts of contractors. He went above and beyond to help us out with our bank mortgage too. He was responsive, professional and negotiated a brilliant deal for us. He has also published a book and updates his video blog regularly. He is our go-to real estate agent for all our future property needs and we gladly recommend him to anyone who wants bang for their buck in Vancouver.

As a first time buyer, I couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Owen’s knowledge and professionalism were valuable assets. I’d have no problem recommending his services as a buyer’s agent.
Through probably one of the most difficult real estate transactions, buying my condo in New Westminster, Owen was extremely patient and flexible and walked me through each step of the process with a wealth of knowledge, insight, and professionalism. He also brought well thought out strategies based on his decades of experience on the selling side when I decided to sell my condo because I had to move across the country for work. In both transactions, the results were about as good as you can get and I believe Owen played the largest role in that happening. I feel extremely fortunate to call Owen my Realtor.
Trevor Boychuk, Vancouver
The fact that Owen has a video blog and now has ventured in to publishing successful investment strategies goes to show the willingness to stake his reputation on what works in real estate. Thats the type of realtor you want to have on your side.

Owen is a complete professional that you can have the utmost confidence in. Owen was highly recommended to me by a friend and he exceeded my expectations. He sold my townhouse for a record setting price, netting me far more than I thought possible. I have since used Owen twice more for the purchase of my new home as well as an investment property. He’s very knowledgeable, experienced and an expert negotiator. I have since recommended Owen to friends and family… he’s the best!

His knowledge and enthusiasm for what he does really made him stand out from other Realtors we had interviewed. We appreciated him answering our questions along the way and keeping us updated every week. We would definitely use his services again and tell our friends and family as well!”

Worth a million dollar
Amazing simple yet effective investment approach. Very easy to read book, finish in 2 hours. But I'm sure I'll be reading it again from time to time.
It echos some of Warren Buffet's core investing principles. It gets readers on track to have the mindset for long term investor in RE and stock.
This is not about get rich quickly scheme, it's about principles, habits, and mentality that one should have in order to achieve financial independence. Imagine waking up and enjoy the day without reporting to anyone. And calling the shot on how you want to spend your time is true wealth. Time is the true wealth. Nothing else is because nothing can buy time.
Lastly, I wish Owen was my realtor when I was hunting my investment properties!
Who can benefit the most from reading Along for the Ride?
Along for the Ride is extremely interesting and inspiring book that grabs attention starting with first pages. In order to gain life long experience in real estate or stocks you do not need to spend years of your own life, just implement knowledge and ideas from Owen's book.
Who can benefit the most from reading Along for the Ride ?
Someone who has a certain goal to become financially independent, someone who has a lot of years to live ahead in their 20s to 30s and someone who is wondering what is happening in Vancouver BC.
What I like the most:
- every single page is interesting and has valuable information
- vivid examples: mortgage calculator, 33 W. Pender Street, analogy like UFC fights and a ghost ship to wealth
- knowledge and ideas provided are easy to digest
- bloody honesty
Some personal opinion about possible improvement:
- highlight main ideas so it is easier to follow or summary
- more real life deals and people
In conclusion, happy to buy this book, ROI will be huge :)

Great Book if you want to do well in real estate. A must read. Simple and interesting. Great info on stocks as well. Thanks Owen.
An awesome book that outlines the most level headed real estate investment strategy: buy and hold long term. Lots of great tips.
The best way to spend your $9
I bought this book because I watched all if his video. Combination of stock and real estate investment will make any person rich in a long term. You just have to be cosistent, patient, and have reasonable investment knowledge. Strongly recommend for people living in Vancouver and cities facing un-affordable housing.

Though it is written in a Canadian context I've recommended it to several friends now
Wish I read this book 25 years ago when I was still living in Vancouver! Though it is written in a Canadian context I've recommended it to several friends now, as the principles resonate beyond investing in Vancouver. Owen's book is easy to read as he combines his anecdotal insights and the research into practical and accesible advice. The main reason I think so highly of this book is that it goes along with my approach to investment and how it is developingin many ways, espcecially his "hold and keep" strategy. It's all too tempting to cash in for short term goals this age of immediate gratification, and he strongly espouses the opposite in all types of investments. Although the primary focus is on real estate as an investment strategy, he does stress the importance other asset classes, both their potential and pitfalls. I also like his positive, constructive and humble narrative in his writing, proving again, that only the truly succesful can afford to be humble. Readers should also check his youtube videos. They are an informative supplement to this book
What it takes is patience and focus on the long-term and Owen does a great job delivering this message
This book teaches you how to think long term and let your money work for you. I've always thought that you don't have to be an expert in real estate or the stock marketto do well as an investor and this book validates that with a plan of that the regualr person and achieve. What it takes s patience and focus on the long term and Owen does a great job delivering this message.
A must-read book for new real estate investors, even in overheated markets!
As a newbie, but serious, investor facing an extremely expensive market in Vancouver, Canada, this engaging book provides a practical step-by-step roadmap for building passive income from real estate and stocks. I am encouraged to learn that it is still very achievable even these crazy times! I will definitely be acting on Mr. Bigland's excellent suggestions!
I would also not recommend the book for people who lack discipline
Our society seems rife with the likes of folks seeking instant gratification. This book is not for them or anyone prone to get-rich-quick schemes! It would be an anathema to the those individuals! I would also not recommend the book for people who lack discipline. But for those with a will to aspire, who don't mind putting work into something long lasting and for the long haul, this book will help them achieve financial independence. Owen writes from experience and shares his experiences candidly. It also serves him well that his father has modeled for him the attributes a person needs to succeed and has mentored him. For someone without such a mentor, Owen provides a clear, concise, straightforward approach in almost a step-by step manner. He addresses the much needed mental frame of mind to succeed in chapter 2. Thought that was smart to weed out those not cut out for what he is recommending. I've know Owen for over 18 years and he's freely shared tips on property, stocks, and exercising/body building with me over those years. He genuinely wants to pass on to others what has worked for him and his years of experience have served him well. That he lists those stocks in his portfolio is demonstrative of his open approach to the subjects. Kudos to Nick Raithel for making the subject easily understandable.

A Must read!!
I'm not Warren Buffett by any stretch, but I found Owens book to be both informative and concise. I found the book to be a plethora of helpful and useful tips for anyone from a major developer to your weekend real estate flipper! I've already read the book front to back and I can't emphasize how many useful tools I now have at my fingertips. Thanks to this book, I now feel confident going into my next investor presentations. So THANK YOU Mr BIgland!!
Excellent read on long term investing in Real estate and stock
Owen stresses on the importance of buying quality blue-chip stock and holding for long term (preferably forever). He shares his stock portfolio. For real estate, Owen talks about purchasing in premium locations (even if that means paying extra, and always think long term) and gives real life examples of properties in Vancouver and how they have appreciated over time. I slightly disagree with the author as I feel its too risky to buy investment properties that has negative cashflow from day 1, despite his examples shows that on the long term it works out. Past performance of appreciation is not an indicator of future. For a primary residence, sure, we all need a roof over our head and renting long term makes no sense, especially in today's historic low Canadian interest rate. Overall, its an excellent read if you want to invest long term in stock market and/or buy a property for living/investing in Vancouver.
This book is a great read, was honest and easy to follow
This book is a great read, was honest and easy to follow. There are a lot of important guiding principles in the book and it is worth reading twice to fully grasp all the great advice in there. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone getting started in investing and especially real estate investing. Owen has helped me come much closer to financial freedom and this book lays the path to get there.
Great book. Highly recommended. Can finish in 1 or 2 sittings. If you want to build a passive income, this is a great read.
Like finding a pearl in the sand
Owen Bigland is really not your typical realtor. I have read couple of books out there on the market, including books that have far more positive reviews than this one. Which is understandable as this book was just launched and Owen is not the 'big names' in the real estate "yet" (I'm stressing this because I am foreseeing that his name will be mentioned more often as time passes).
I decided to buy this book after seeing some of his youtube videos and blogs. To be honest, one of very first things that captured me was his passion and realistic view on the market. Also, he gives advice in the most objective view, without too much of over-hype intentions, which you see in many real estate books and seminars. I am not saying that other books are bad, they are great read, but I think 'Along for the Ride' shows an uncommon example of 'how to start and your expectations'.
Too often, I find most real estate books concentrate on the big picture, and also show examples of their successful portfolios using heavy leverage system. Some people think it may be a scam, but it is not actually. The problem, however, is that these examples oversimplify things and the audience is usually geared towards experienced real estate investor, not first comers.
This books is well-written in a fact that it does not give you unrealistic views, and stresses the point: "start small and slow, and eventually grow further". I like this, because this not only applies to the real estate world, but in many business aspects. I have yet to meet the author, but his passion and interest really drove me into buying it, and I can assure that you won't regret it either.
If you are still unsure about buying this book, I recommend you to check out his youtube channel or blog to check out his personality. If you like his way of speech, there is no doubt about this one.
Enjoy the ride
I went on the ride and boy did it open my eyes. Thank you Owen. I won't be surprised to see your book in the list on the second last page in a couple years
